Poe

Edgar Allan Poe was a great poem and short story writer, who's work is usually very dark, mysterious and sad.  An example of this is "The Raven".   "The Raven" is about a man sitting in his room when a bird appears and says "nevermore".  The man slowly starts to realize this has a darker meaning as he asks the bird about his dead family and all the bird reply's is "nevermore".
In Poe's life many of his family died which is probably why his writing is so dark.  It seems mean to say this but in the end it seems good what happened because it influenced Poe to write such fantastic stories.
Poe was found on a street in strange clothing and later died in the hospital.  It seems to match his poetry which was always mysterious for him to die like this.

What is an American?

An American is someone who lives in and embraces American culture.  This is what an American is because is because the United States is rather new country so people can trace their heritage back before it.  If the definition of an American is any more narrowed then very few to no people will be able to call themselves American.  It is important to be able to call yourself an American because it gives people a bigger connection and stronger attachment to the United States.
